Two Days in Corfu Itinerary

Corfu has so many things to do and sites to see. On your first day in Corfu, do not lose time and go to Corfu Town, the capital of the island. This town mostly distinguishes for its architecture that was inspired by the Venetian style: narrow paths with tall houses on the sides, tall buildings with small windows and no balconies, many churches and large squares.

Corfu Town: Corfu Town is the capital of Corfu (Kerkyra in Greek) one of the most beautiful and elegant towns in Greece. It is the principal port of the island and one of the largest and most populated (30,000 inhabitants) towns of the Ionian Islands. Built on a promontory, the town displays a unique architecture which is strongly influenced from the different dominations, such as the Sicilian, the Venetian, the French and the English ones. From those times, Corfu Town has kept many of its imposing buildings, elegant mansions, superb palaces, French-style flowered squares and beautiful fortresses.

Have a strong morning coffee in Spianada, with a view to Liston, the cricket court and the Palace of Saints Michael and George, which now houses the Museum of Asian Art. 

Spianada Square Corfu: The main town of Corfu Island is one of the most appealing cities in Greece due to the strong influence of the Venetians. Corfu is also influenced by other civilizations including the British, the Normans, the French, and the Romans. “

The Museum of Asian Art:  The Museum of Asian Art in Corfu is the only museum of this kind in Greece. It is housed in an imposing neoclassical building near Liston promenade, Espianada square, in the Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George. This building was constructed between 1819 and 1824 by the British and initially served as the residence of the British High Commissioners of the Ionian islands. 

Then, walk around the Old Town and see the elegant mansions. Go to the Old Fortress and climb up to the lighthouse to see the gorgeous view. Then, go to the New Fortress, near the Old Port. If you have time, visit the Archaeological Museum of Corfu, near the tennis court, to see ancient findings from Corfu and Epirus. A must visit is also the Palace of Mon Repos, in Kanoni area, the old royal summer house. A couple of km away from Mon Repos, there is Kanoni, probably the most photographed spot in Corfu. There, you can see the famous church of Panagia Vlacherna and take the short ride to Pontikonisi islet.

The New Fortress (Fortress of Saint Mark): The Fortress of Saint Mark in Corfu is also referred to as the Fortress of San Marco. It was built by the Venetians and is strategically located in close proximity to the Old Harbour of the town. It took a rather long time to be built (1576 and 1645). Construction of this impregnable fortress was completed soon after the infamous Turkish invasion. The design and construction of the Fortress were undertaken by the renowned Italian military engineer, Ferraute Vitteli. 

The Archaeological Museum: The Archaeological Museum of Corfu exhibits findings from several excavated sites in the wider region of the island, like Paleopolis, Kanoni, Garitsa, Kassiopi. The museum is housed in a modern building donated by the municipality of Corfu, in Vraila Armeni street, close to the bay of Garitsa.

Mon Repos Palace in Corfu: Mon Repos Palace is situated on top of Analipsis hill, near Kanoni area, in the middle of a beautiful setting full of greenery. It was built in 1826 by the British Commissioner Frederic Adams as a gift to his Corfiot wife, Nina Palatianou. It is a small but very beautiful palace with colonial architectural elements. 

At noon, go to Paleokastritsa, the most famous and organized tourist resort in Corfu. This is the spot of Corfu with the most hotels and many fishing taverns on the shore. The good thing with Paleokastritsa is the clean water and the nice environment, the bad thing is the always crowded spots. Above the beach, there is a nice monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary and a couple of km away, there is Angelokastro, an impressive medieval fortress. From Paleokastritsa, you can also take the boat to go for an excursion in the close caves and remote beaches.

Paleokastritsa: Paleokastritsa is arguably the most famous picturesque village of the island of Corfu located 23 km northwest of Corfu Town. The word Paleokastritsa iterally means old fortress, witnessing the existence of such a castle on the rocky cave where now stands the Monastery of the Virgin. The following transit lines have routes that pass near Paleokastritsa. Angelokastro Castle: Aggelokastro, which is also referred to as Angel Castle, is strategically located in close proximity to Krini. It is believed to date back to the 13th century. The Aggelokastro is conspicuous by its domed gate at the entrance. It boasts of priceless vestiges and there are exclusive storage rooms as well. Another interesting remnant is an ancient church dedicated to the angels Gabriel and Michael which is surprisingly constructed in a cave. The following transit lines have routes that pass near Angelokastro. For your lunch or dinner wander back into old town and visit Efi’s Alley restaurant. Ask for Kimonas. Tell him you are a guest of Vacedo and he will take great care of you.

On the second day, visit the northeastern side of Corfu, the most developed and crowded part of the island. The first stop is Dassia, a tourist village with a beautiful beach to have a morning swim. At noon, go to Kassiopi, a lovely fishing village that has nice traditional taverns at the port. Your next stop is Sidari, a windy village, and Canal D’ Amour, which means the Channel of Love. This is an impressive site with a small beach among huge rock formations. This part of Corfu, particularly Sidari and Acharavi, are famous for their qualitative nightlife and nice bars.

Dasia: Dasia is a popular resort located between the villages of Gouvia and Ipsos, 13 km from Corfu Town. With a friendly and cosmopolitan atmosphere, Dassia has become one of the most inviting places to spend relaxing vacation in Corfu. The following transit lines have routes that pass near Dassia. Kassiopi: The village of Kassiopi lies 35 km north of Corfu Town, opposite the Albanian coasts. This small picturesque fishing village counts 1200 inhabitants and is dominated by a Roman fortress where it is also believed that the Emperor Nero once stood near this location.
